I stumbled on this 1972 Porsche 914 over on Hagerty’s Marketplace — currently sitting at $8,750 with 14 bids.
That’s a head-scratcher, because even Hagerty’s own valuation tool lists these at around $20,000 for an average example.
So either someone’s about to snag a deal… or they’re buying a future headache with great paint.

⚙️ The Setup

The seller notes that the car’s based in Casper, Wyoming, and that there aren’t many European mechanics in the area who can handle older Porsches.
Fair enough — but let’s not pretend this thing requires a PhD in Stuttgart Engineering to keep running.

The 914 came with a 1.7-liter air-cooled flat-four, basically a Volkswagen engine wearing a Porsche badge.
(The early 914s shared DNA with VW’s Type 4 powerplants — so yes, you could wrench on it without summoning the ghost of Ferdinand Porsche.)

Still, the comment section on the auction page reads like an episode of CSI: Tailpipe.
Apparently there’s a “smell from the exhaust,” and everyone’s suddenly an emissions detective — over an $8,750 car.
Relax, it’s not a 918 Spyder. It’s a 914 in Casper, Wyoming — where half the cowboys don’t even realize “Porsche” is a two-syllable word.

💡 The Bigger Picture

This is what happens in the modern auction world:

This particular car shows 49K miles, is a second-owner, and came from a friend’s estate sale.
That’s actually solid history for a car over 50 years old.
And honestly, if it’s not leaking oil — it’s probably hiding something we should all be afraid of.

Why are 914s still treated like Porsche’s ugly stepchild?
Because they were born from a VW–Porsche joint venture — not pure Stuttgart bloodline — and Porsche purists can be snobs about that.

But that’s changing.
Clean, documented 914s are climbing quietly while everyone else fights over $200K 911s.
I think they’re cool.
At some point, this car’s going to have its revenge arc.

If you’re in this for the story, not the status — this mid-engine targa is one of the best “analog fun” cars you can buy for the money.
And if it sells for under $10K? Somebody’s either scoring a steal or signing up for garage therapy.

Tempting? Sure.
But after owning 60+ cars, I’ve learned one thing:
Every time I say “I don’t need another Porsche” — I might end up driving one a week later.
